Incentivization, formalization and Productivity of small and medium enterprises in Africa: COVID 19 & 2019 African Continental Free Trade Area

Key messages:

Small medium enterprises are also the backbone of Africa’s economy and hire about 80 percent of labor force, but contribute only 1 percent of GDP in most nations in the continent.  IFC reports that 95% of businesses in Nigeria are SMEs while 65% of businesses in Europe are SMEs.  But in Nigeria, 41.5 million SMEs contribute only 1% of GDP while SMEs contribute 50% of GDP in Europe and 40% in Asia.  Why? More than 50% of the SMEs in African nations are in the informal sector and unproductive services sector and the lockdown from COVID19 has worsened their plight and economic insecurity.  Protectionist policies and limited supply chain of companies have undermined exportation of food and medical supplies to the nations.  However, the challenges have also created an opportunity for public and private sector to promote and capitalize on opportunities to strengthen SME productivity and inclusiveness. Our TV digital will highlight these opportunities and more, including lessons, good practices and next measures.
