After you file an application, USCIS sends a receipt notice with a 13-character receipt number: three letters followed by ten digits. This number lets you track your case online, free of charge, on the Case Status Online page of USCIS.
The steps
- Find the receipt number on your notice (Form I-797).
- Go to the official uscis.gov website and open the case status page.
- Enter all 13 characters, without spaces or dashes.
- Read the status shown and the description that goes with it.
Beware of fake sites
Case tracking is free. Only enter your number on a site ending in .gov, and never pay to get your status.
